Crysis 2

Looks like Crysis 2 will be hitting around March 2011 bumped from the original Holiday 2010 release time frame.  Nice video footage of New York City being destroyed, complete with Time Square!

Lack of FPS Excitement, Follow-Up

On September 9, I commented on the lack of FPS excitement and so far it’s starting to appear to be carrying over even after several of the titles have been released. Crysis Warhead has had general good reviews for gameplay and horrible condemnation on having SECUROM.

Far Cry 2, while having SECUROM DRM as well, has been additionally under fire for game play.  Seems some things need to be worked out in the wideopen sandbox environment created in the African forests.  Complaints have included repetitive missions, excessive rebel re-spawns and damage to the rebels as the only means to increase the difficulty of the game,  and lack of gamer immersion.  Graphics are truely a sight to behold but if a game isn’t compelling, most gamers will simply shelve the game and move on to the next.

Today we’ll see Call of Duty: World at War hit shelves (or coming off shelves as we speak).  The hype following this game is the opportunity to do 4 player co-op through missions.  After playing the multi-player beta, the co-op is will save the game.  In all honesty, multi-player moves just like Call of Duty 4 and feels almost like a clone with new graphics.  I truly miss the days of Call of Duty and CoD 2 where it felt less like a game of Quake and more like what most combat shooters felt like.  So if co-op doesn’t turn out to be all that it could be I’ll be quite disappointed.  For MP I would rather just stay with CoD 4 and it’s player spamming.  Maybe some of the additional maps will have some redeeming value but who knows.  I’ll post back later after I

Lack of FPS Excitement

I happen to notice the “This Time Last Year” post mentioning Bioshock and I realized that we’ve not been hit with very little exciting news on the FPS gaming front this fall.  At this point last year we had a few titles already hit (ET: Quake Wars, Medal of Honor: Airborne and, as mentioned, Bioshock) with quite a few on the horizon for late fall (UT3, Crysis, Call of Duty 4, Timeshift, Hellgate: London, F.E.A.R. Perseus Mandate, Painkiller: Overdose and an initial Frontlines: Fuel of War demo).  So that was 3 titles already out and 8 demos available by mid October.

So far this year we have Far Cry 2 scheduled for October and Crysis Warhead coming next Tuesday.  Call of Duty: World at War is coming complete with Kiefer Sutherland lending his voice with a November release but I’m not sure where this game really treads new ground.  I guess I’m happy to see another WWII installment but the Pacific theater doesn’t ever seem to be that popular in gaming.  The addition of bushido rules and the reinsertion of vehicles may work out.  Throw in Jack Bauer barking out orders and maybe it’s a more exciting release than I’m expecting.  Battlefield Heroes is suppose to hit as a free

A Few Things…

I’ve not posted a lot since I’ve been busy with a few other sites. One of which is myGamerZone, which I’m hoping to be up soon… just need to clean it up a bit and make it a bit more flashy. It’s not intended to be a clan like site but rather a site that combines a blog, review site and gaming. I’m hoping to get the forums and galleries up this weekend and work towards a bit more “flash”.

There’s really nothing exciting going on in the FPS world either so I’ve just been playing UT3, BF2 and BF2142. I really need to get back into the single player games that are sitting unfinished (CoD 4, Crysis and both Half-Life 2 episodes). I’ve also ventured back into UT2004 and UT99 with mixed results… I think my weapons only adventures in UT3 has improved my aim in UT2004 on IG and sniper moded servers… I’ve enjoyed a few very good nights… UT99 is another story, it’s really a shock to the system going into that after playing UT3 graphically and in terms of physics. It’s amazing to look at the 3 and how the graphics have changed over the, almost, 9 years. I’d love to see a UT99 10th Anniversary Edition released using the UT3 engine, it won’t happen but get back some of the feel with the updated graphics would be awesome! :)

ATI 3870HD Crossfire, Take 2

The flicker issue has been resolved and was due to my own negligence. ATI recommends both connectors but based on reading a lot of threads, fixing the flickering can also be achieved by only connecting a single CF connector. Unfortunately I had connected the one farthest from the external DVI connector which apparently also causes the flickering (didn’t read it but was fixed by moving it to the front). In haste of installation I didn’t go back over it. So that’s been corrected and it’s running great in all but UT3. UT3 is now running longer but eventually locks up. While I’d like to blame the driver/UT3 I think it’s something else like load on the PSU which should be able to handle the load. I only say this because when this is about to occur I hear, what I believe to be, my UPS beep several times and in a short time the game locks. What I find odd is that this occurs in no other game or at no other time. The system runs rock solid outside of UT3 and shows no issues before the beeps in it. I’ve not had any issues in Frontlines like this either and it is running on the Unreal engine. The only thing I can think of is that it’s the speed of UT3 as compared to other games I play(?). I’ve also not noticed it in Crysis but I’ve not gotten into any games that are nearly as heavy as TDM/Warfare on UT3. However, I’ve also ran 3DMark06 several times in a row without the issue.

The only other thing I’m going to take a look at this weekend is voltage and do some CPU stress tests. I am running the E6600 at 3GHz using one of the OC profiles so my first test will probably be tweaking the voltage and FSB on the P5W DH OC menus. I’ve been happy with the 2.4-3.0GHz boost on air so really not tried individual tweaks to push it to the 3.2-3.6GHz range that people have said is possible with good cooling like my Tuniq tower. I’ll probably do that tomorrow and bring it back down to 2.4GHz tonight and try UT3 since that’s the easiest starting point.

The other interesting thing I found was that the Catalyst drivers don’t include everything for the HD cards even though the download is specific to the 3870′s.  I found this out by having my video not working on everything in Media Player.  After checking codecs (which included standard WMV), I ended up (for the first time that I can recall) installing from the CD and then updating the card to Catalyst 8.3 which still makes me wonder if there are other updates I’m missing.  I disable the audio since it kills the default audio.
