I’m really surprised that they’ve already used the frostbite engine based on the issues and glitches in the game. Xbox players losing stats, PunkBuster issues on the PC, horrible support for the veteran program and general glitches. I’ve been playing through single player and jumping in late on multiplayer in hopes that the reduced load means I can get some decent games but the decent games I was getting before the latest patches have been plagued with Punkbuster issues.
Single player is a lot fun, I finished a map that was sniper heavy and it was great getting the hell kicked out of me trying to find where the snipers were. In this same map, I ran into an issue where I picked up a gun that didn’t give me the credit for finding it, not a big deal really but it also started showing no ammo for my other guns but I could fire. The crew just kind of sat around while I was waiting for them to move forward and finally I ended up moving along on my own, found the objective and finished it. Things were fine after the cut scene. My big grip with SP is that they have quite a few that have too much intensity to not have an extra save. In particular, you take out the ground forces and face 2 helicopters at the end. It would be nice to have a save before facing somewhat of a “boss” challenge. Instead I died a few times trying to take out the heli’s and I had to respawn and go through the same ground troops again. Annoying as hell.
Nelson Bay on the Rush mode is probably my favorite right now. There was another in conquest that I really liked that had close action in buildings but I don’t recall the map name. Not too heavy on the armor and reminded me of Strike on BF2 with regards to the infantry fights.
Overall, it’s another DICE release which usually means it’s dicey at launch which I don’t really understand. 1942 was their entry and I could see the issues occuring but they’re using an engine that ran the first Bad Company and they have 4 FPS games under their belt, I’d think they’d be ready for this crap. As far as I remember 2142 was a decent release and an extension of BF2 much like Vietnam was an extension of 1942 but had more issues. They had finally gotten a lot of issues out of the way with BF2 / 2142 and I would think things like saving your default guns for each class would be there from the beginning but I have to choose every class again from game to game.
It’s frustrating but I’ve been down the road before, the game play is incredible and there’s no doubt they’ll get things worked out but I only hope it’s not after a year or more like BF2.
Just a quick post of how the video settings compare. Click to view the full image… All of them are 640×1200 resolution (each image being 400) and are low to high from top to bottom.
After playing this many more hours, I’m still loving it even with it’s single map and mod. I wish they’d release another map, after all it’s a beta to pre-orders and not a demo. With a little over 14 hours in I’m not getting bored however some of the squad teaming is a different story. I don’t get people who will sit a mile away from the base and snipe while we’re getting hammered or just hang back for some reason rather than attacking. I had a squad doing this through an entire match and unfortunately I had a difficult time getting to the front lines with 4 of them doing, who knows what, back at the entry point.
I don’t mind playing MW2 much like I didn’t mind MW or WaW but for me it doesn’t have the lasting effect that the Battlefield series provides with the map size and a somewhat different experience each round because everyone has different tactics or abilities. MW2 is generally linear in terms of what’s going to happen.
My final note… Anyone not buying this game because they can’t run a free server AND still plays MW2 needs kicked in the groin.

Bad Company 2 is in beta for pre-orders and I’m in Nirvana. Finally an FPS has been released that makes me jump for joy. I wasn’t sure how badly they’d implement the game in this day and age of console porting but they’ve done an excellent job on the game. I’m missing the command button to call out enemies, thank yous but I’m hoping that will be there at some point. It seems they took some of the good things from the Call of Duty series and made them better such as melee. No quick, 1 random knife shot, I’ve had a few but I’ve also seen where it takes a few swings of the blade to take down the enemy and I know I hit them on the first because of the “ugh” sound. It’s refreshing rather than the, what sometimes seems like, the 10 feet long knifes from MW2 and even BF2/BF2142.
The familiar accumulative stats, as previous BF games, are there as well. The current mod they’re demoing is also fun but quite tough as the attacking team if you have no one that can get in to the base. It’s an attack/defense mod where the attacking team parachutes in and attempts to destroy key objects. It already seems a bit more polished than BF2/BF2142 in terms of the interface, outside of the EXTREMELY slow server browser and lack of sorting servers by latency or players and the filters resetting after every restart but again, hopefully that will be added as well. It allows you to immediately join a squad, the ability to spawn on players and as I said, most of the “goodies” from the BF series.
So far I’m loving this game. It’s the type of FPS game I’ve been waiting for since BF2 began to grow long in the tooth and I’m looking forward to the March release! I have some video’s and screenshots I’ll get up soon but in the mean time, check out the official trailer at Battlefield.com or watch below!
