Hail To The King, Baby!!

w00t! Sometime in 2011 it will finally be a reality! Apparently it was nearly finished and Gearbox is porting it to the Xbox 360 and PS3 as well as doing some finishing touches. Is it true? Can it be real? Pinch me! Not only that but I love reading that a PC game is being ported rather than the other way around! I only hope that you don’t play a good game only to have it looked rushed towards the end levels. Either way, I’ll be playing the moment it’s available, I’ve been waiting for 13 FREAKIN’ years!
The news is a few weeks old but I finally remembered to post it…

Samsung Epic 4G, Day 2

We’re on to day 2! w00t! Battery time isn’t the greatest and I’ll probably pick up another on eBay or Amazon in the near future just to have one charged and in my backpack in the event that I’m not around a PC or in my car (a win for my Maxima with the connectivity, if it only read Android like it does iPhone…bastards
). I’ve been adjusting the volume today on calls, it’s much, much louder than the iPhone. Conversations that I had on the iPhone typically were at full blast and still sometimes lower than my liking but so far I’ve had the Epic about 1/2-3/4 and heard just fine… If it’s all the way up, it crackles a bit. I’d much rather have the speaker too loud than too soft at maximum volume. The service is great for Sprint compared to AT&T. I use to walk through my house or even sit on my couch and get some dropout on calls. So far, I’ve had none of that and even gave it a test by walking from the second floor to the first floor to outside.
I did install Google Voice and it worked well, a little dropout but that was also talking to my sister on Verizon in a more rural area so it could have been a bit of both but still a little more than my MagicJack but I was happy with the overall quality of Wi-Fi Google Voice for free. Google Voice didn’t fair as well over Sprint on the freeway but a nasty storm w/tornado warnings could have been to blame. A few long conversations with the sister and my mom in addition to general play on the phone and the time between charges showed about 9.5 hours. Neat stat that I found tonight to show what used the most battery time….76% was conversation. I did grab a few more apps today but I’ll do an app round up over the weekend.
I ordered a USB extension cord and micro USB cable to use with the plug in my bedroom to charge it overnight and use it as an alarm, both from Amazon again and part of my $36 credit for the activation fee. They should be here tomorrow.
Nothing beyond that for the time being…. Until the next check in…
Samsung Epic 4G, Day 1

I received my beautiful Samsung Epic 4G last night from Amazon. I was able to pick it up for $199 with no rebates. I also, with some dealing, had the $36 activation refunded from Amazon. They ran a promotion from 9/6 – 9/13 but my order was technically 9/2 but I had to wait until 9/13 before it was even shipped, I thought it was only right. It took 2 e-mails but the second CSR seemed to understand why and also understood the amount of business I do with Amazon (Xbox 360 Elite, Onkyo receiver, Blu-Ray player, Samsung 46″ LCD among other things in the past 6 months). I’m not going into a review of packaging, features, etc. of the phone since there are plenty of reviews out there. I simply want to post my experiences with the phone from the beginning.
Anyway, day 1 has gone well with the device. The display is beautiful, interface and setup was a snap and every bit as easy as an iPhone. As soon as I logged into Google, it pulled all of my contacts, which wasn’t really a great thing since I also realized what a mess my contacts were, even having cleaned them up last year. I ended up spending an hour to clean up, merge and do some other work on the Google contacts along with my iPhone contacts and then reset the phone to factory default and started over resulting in a much nicer list and relevant set of contacts. So I would suggest that if you haven’t taken a look at your Google contacts, you may want to do so before getting a new phone. I also like how it allowed me to chose who I wanted to pull in from Facebook and how it keeps 3 lists; Google, Facebook and combined showing Facebook info along with my Google contacts. It seems to me it will make it much easier to untangle things if I were to ditch Facebook at some point.
It’s taken a little getting use to after being on the iPhone for the past 18 months and I’ve found that I do miss the swipe/delete feature that iPhone has on just about any kind of communication and I personally think some of the screen sliding seemed a bit cleaner (not smoother) on the iPhone. I realize I can hold my finger on any conversation in mail, SMS, etc. and it will give me a menu to delete from, just a bit quicker and cleaner with iOS. With those few things out of the way, this thing completely kicks the iPhone 3G’s ass on speed. It honestly felt like the old days of going from one generation of PC to the next. I click something and it immediately launches, browsing, even on Wi-Fi, is leaps and bounds faster. I understand that the 3G is now a whopping 2 years old but I’m strictly comparing my upgrade.
I found my frequent applications that I used on the iPhone with the exception of Chase Bank (which I’m surprised they’ve not released an Android app yet). The quick reference apps like IMDB, Wiki, Shazam, iHeart Radio, Pandora and SnapTell. I’ve also grabbed a few apps like Handcent that allows the bubble conversations in SMS like the iPhone, which I do like. The first app that I installed was Advanced Task Killer to help manage the overflowing applications that open on the phone.
I’ve tried out all the variations of typing, from the slide-out keyboard to the onscreen options like swype and what is equivalent to the iPhone’s auto-correct. I’ve kind of settled on the later at the moment since it’s familar while I get use to having a keyboard. My verdict is still out on the keyboard since I’m not used to it. Swype is very cool after using it for a while and hardly a novelty as some have called it.
Not much else to say for today, I hope to keep updating as I learn the phone, good and bad as well as any apps that I find useful.
Bad Company 2 WTFs

I don’t get the players half the time in this game anymore. It seemed at the beginning that people played as a team, took the shots together and got the job done. Now it seems that everyone wants to preserve their KDR and could give a shit about wins in both Conquest and Rush. Panama Canal is a good example, you have 4 players on your team, you take a tank out and no one ever spawns in the tank, well that is unless you’re about to take a point and then it fills up and immediately empties when the point is taken. Half the freakin’ team is snipers at this point in a lot of games that could care less if we take a point or not as long as they finish with a good score. After the game they seem to pat themselves on the back as if they were the single thing that won a game and if not, it’s complete silence or “my team sucks”.
The game is set up so well for team play, unlike MW2, and yet they play it like MW2, forgetting that there is an objective to this game. that isn’t won by a KDR. I’m only assuming, but thinking, that a lot of MW2 players have migrated as MW2 has grown old and they’re looking for something new to play and completely disregarding that THIS GAME is team and objective based.
Just getting really tired of joining a squad and finding that my 3 teammates are all snipers or like being a camping engineer with a Gustav. I blame EA/DICE only for the freakin’ run and gun that seems to exist with the sniper kit.
[End Rant]
